Afghanistan: MEPs to discuss women’s rights in the country | News


Members of the Human Rights Subcommittee and the Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality will meet with Parliament’s delegation for relations with Afghanistan to discuss the worrying situation facing women and girls in the country under the Taliban.

This exchange of views will begin with a statement from the head of the European Union delegation to Afghanistan, Andreas von Brandt. MEPs will then hold discussions with the President of the Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) Shaharzad Akbar, Vice President of the International Human Rights Association (FIDH) Guissou Jahangiri, Sahra Karimi, Afghan film director and President of the Afghan Film Organization. As well as the commission.

During the debate, MEPs are expected to call on all EU member states to work together to ensure safe passage for anyone at risk and support the safety and welfare of women and girls from Afghanistan .
