LAC: India & China agree on ‘early and complete disengagement’ | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Indian and Chinese officials agreed on “early and complete disengagement of troops along the LAC and de-escalation from India-China border areas” at Friday’s meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on India-China Border Affairs (WMCC) in the wake of lack of progress in areas like Pangong Tso.
The virtual meeting, which was led by Naveen Srivastava, joint secretary (east Asia) in the MEA, reviewed the disengagement process along the LAC in eastern Ladakh. And India insisted, yet again, that “full restoration of peace and tranquillity was essential for smooth overall development of bilateral relations”.
According to sources, the disengagement process has largely been completed in the Galwan Valley, but has slowed down in Pangong Tso and Hot Springs areas, which is a matter of concern in India. An official readout from the MEA said: “They agreed in this regard that it was necessary for both sides to sincerely implement understandings reached between senior commanders in their meetings till date.” This has been repeated in all WMCC meetings, and the MEA’s stress on it means that China needs to be constantly reminded of this fact.
Yet another round of talks between military commanders is scheduled in the coming days to get the Chinese to disengage.
