CM Uddhav ThackerayMUMBAI: The Shiv Sena has stretched its ambition to the PM’s chair and, in pursuance of it, resolved to play an active role in national politics.
“I would be more than happy to see a Shivsainik become the prime minister and all of us will endeavour to ensure a Shivsainik leads the country one day,” chief minister Uddhav Thackeray said on the 54th foundation day of the party on Friday.
RS member Sanjay Raut said the party would like that Shivsainik to be Thackeray, who is party president.
“You are leading the state courageously,” he said. “The time has come for the Sena to foray into national politics and all of us want you to lead the country.”
Thackeray then responded with a no to the suggestion. “Not for me, but I would be happy to see a Shivsainik become the prime minister of the country,” he said.
Thackeray’s son and minister in his government, Aaditya, emphasised the importance of national politics. The Yuva Sena leader said every state should have a Shiv Sena shakha and the voice of the party should be raised through these.
The meet was the first online party event of the chief minister since he ascended the chair in November.
Thackeray made an emotional address to Shiv Sena functionaries, among them MPs, MLAs, vibhag pramukhs and key leaders. “I could not be in touch with all of you on a regular basis after taking over as the chief minister, but I will never distance you,” he said.
Without naming the BJP or former chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, he said that to trust someone was not his weakness but his culture.
“Some people tried to play politics with us and we foiled it,” he said. “Neither Sena nor its party president has become helpless. I always receive a shower of love from my Shivsainiks.”
He said people made several allegations when the party tied up with the NCP and Congress to form the Maha Vikas Aghadi government but the Shiv Sena had never compromised on its ideology.
The Shiv Sena was founded on June 19, 1966, in Dadar by Balasaheb Thackeray, the father of the party president.
At last year’s function, the Shiv Sena had invited Fadnavis, the then chief minister, as chief guest at Shanmukhananda hall in Kings Circle.
In October, the Shiv Sena and BJP contested the assembly election in alliance but later went their separate ways over who would sit on the chair of the chief minister.
